“I heard of a really scary thing that happened, and if that baby hadn't been born in the hospital it would be dead!”
Safety of the baby is very important to everyone.
When you hear about bad things that happened during a birth there are several things to consider:
• Many of the same emergencies that happen in hospitals can be handled at home when there is a qualified attendant who is integrated into the healthcare system present.
• Many of the emergencies experienced in the hospital are the outcome of preceding elective interventions undertaken for the comfort or convenience of the mother or the obstetrician.
• Many of the emergencies and catastrophes commonly occurring are not random unpredictable events but are predictable and preventable through education, modification of risk factors, and
comprehensive prenatal care with a qualified provider who is integrated into the healthcare system.
• Other emergencies are the outcomes of risk factors that cannot be modified, and those moms and babies are truly safer when giving birth in the hospital. Identification of these moms and babies is best accomplished by a qualified provider who is integrated into the healthcare system.
